MFG Library Website: Referencing - How to make a bibliography

wordle

At MFG we use the Harvard system of referencing.

An easy way to create a Harvard-formatted reference is by using the Bibliography Generator tool from SLASA. This is linked on Compass (under 'Favourites').

This tool helps to accurately create Harvard citations, which you can then copy and paste into your Bibliography.

MFG and the Harvard System of Referencing

Your assignment requires a reference list and/or bibliography. What do you do? Include a list of URLs at the bottom of the page? No!

You need to reference in a certain way - both within your work and at the end of it. This means you acknowledge where you got your information from.

First things first - make sure you understand the terms:

Referencing - this is the process of giving credit to the original owner(s) of the material you may use in your work.

Citation - this is the way you tell readers that some material in your work came from another source (it is not your own). A citation is embedded in the text of your work (this is called an in-text citation). Only senior students at MFG must use these.

Reference list - this is a detailed, alphabetical list of all the references (citations) that you have drawn on in your work. It is placed at the end of your work.

Bibliography -  A bibliography is a detailed, alphabetical list of references (citations) you have drawn on in your work, plus the background readings or other material that you may have read (but not actually cited). It is placed at the end of your work.

The BASICS

At the time of reading an information source, record all of the information (descriptive elements) necessary to create a citation / reference.

You can record this manually by MAKING A COPY of this Research Record doc.

or

You can record this digitally by opening the SLASA Online Referencing Generator.

You will need to select your year level (Junior Y7-8; Middle Y9-10; Senior Y11-12) then your resource type and fill in the required fields.

Click on 'Create reference' then copy and paste the reference you have created into a doc to create a draft reference list.

It is vital to be accurate and clear at this stage to save time verifying these things later on.
