The Systems

  • The tissues, glands, and organs involved in producing offspring (children). In women, the reproductive system includes the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, the uterus, the cervix, and the vagina. In men, it includes the prostate, the testes, and the penis.

  • The excretory system includes organs that facilitate the removal of nitrogenous wastes from the body. The main excretory organs include kidney, ureter, urinary bladder and urethra. Kidneys filter the blood and urine is the filtrate obtained.

  • The musculoskeletal system includes your bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and connective tissues. Your skeleton provides a framework for your muscles and other soft tissues.

  • The nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. It controls much of what you think and feel and what your body does.

  • The immune system protects your child's body from outside invaders. These include germs such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and toxins (chemicals made by microbes). The immune system is made up of different organs, cells, and proteins that work together.

The Systems

  • The digestive system converts the foods we eat into their simplest forms, like glucose (sugars), amino acids (that make up protein) or fatty acids (that make up fats)

  • The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart, lungs and blood vessels all working together. The heart functions as a pump. The blood vessels act as pipes, carrying blood through the body. The lungs supply the blood with oxygen and remove its carbon dioxide.

  • The integumentary system is your body's outer layer. It consists of your skin, hair, nails and glands. These organs and structures are your first line of defense against bacteria and help protect you from injury and sunlight.

  • The respiratory system takes up oxygen from the air we breathe and expels the unwanted carbon dioxide. The main organ of the respiratory system is the lungs. Other respiratory organs include the nose, the trachea and the breathing muscles (the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles).

  • The endocrine system is a complex network of glands and organs. It uses hormones to control and coordinate your body's metabolism, energy level, reproduction, growth and development, and response to injury, stress, and mood.
